The Invention of the TV Dinner

Do you love TV dinners? I know I do. Well, surprising as it may be, we have Thanksgiving to thank for this tasty invention.

It all began in 1953 when the Swanson company found itself with 260 tons of leftover frozen turkey after Thanksgiving. All that meat was just sitting around in refrigerated train cars. In fact, the train’s refrigeration system only worked when the cars were moving, so they had to keep running back and forth between Nebraska and the East Coast…

…Until someone hatched the brilliant idea to package the turkey with popular sides like stuffing and sweet potatoes, and sell them in frozen trays specially designed to be heated in the oven. The next year, they sold 10 million TV Dinners, and the rest is delicious history!

Macy’s Christmas Parade

The original parade took place in 1924 and was actually a Christmas parade. It featured a colorful array of floats, lively bands, and even animals from the local zoo, creating a festive atmosphere that drew large crowds.

Three years later, in 1927, it was renamed the Thanksgiving Day Parade. This change marked the beginning of a new tradition that would become the annual event we know and love today. The big, famous balloon attractions debuted that same year – and they included popular-for-the-time characters like Felix the Cat. Mickey Mouse joined in the fun a few years later, in 1934.

Jingle Bells: The Thanksgiving Song

When composer James Pierpont wrote “Jingle Bells” under its original title, “One Horse Open Sleigh,” in 1857, he originally intended it to be a festive Thanksgiving Day song that would help usher in the winter season.

But as soon as people heard the catchy tune, they quickly embraced it as an unofficial Christmas anthem, associating it with the joy of the holidays. The song’s name was eventually changed to “Jingle Bells,” a title that perfectly captures its festive spirit, and it’s only grown in popularity since.
